Seiichi Furuya Mémoires.
Furuya left Yokohama for Siberia by ship in 1973 and made his way to Europe. He settled initially in Vienna and later moved to Graz, Austria. There, he met Christine Gössler in 1978, and the two married that year. The couple moved repeatedly during their years together, setting up housekeeping at several sites in Graz, in Vienna, and in East Berlin, where Christine took her life in 1985. Furuya returned to Graz with his and Christine’s son in 1987, and the photographer continues to reside there.
The Furuya oeuvre has centered on Mémoires, a series of exhibitions and photographic books that began in 1989. That series presents views of Christine and of the couple’s turbulent life together. Family history and European history intertwine inseparably in Furuya’s work. The Mémoires photographs, however, are anything but mere documentary records of decisive instants in any history. Rather, they are remembrances by an individual whose heart has spanned a vast emotional gamut and who shares with us an evolving orientation.
Furuya, throughout his work, presents boldly the potential for expressing the human condition through photography. This exhibition should prove stimulating for anyone who has ever taken a camera in hand.

Presented Works
