Koizumi Yakumo – The Secret of Lafcadio Hearn
Exhibition commemorating 160th Anniversary of Hearn’s birth and 120th Anniversary of his arrival in Japan

The Greek Irish author, Patrick Lafcadio Hearn (27 June 1850 – 26 September 1904), also known as Koizumi Yakumo after gaining Japanese citizenship, was best known for his books about Japan, especially for Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things that features several Japanese ghost stories.
This exhibition makes attempt to visualize what Hearn had seen through his life in Japan, and through his imagination. Hearn was born in Lefkada, one of the Greek Ionian Islands. He moved to and lived in Ireland, also in the United States of America. Then, in 1890, Hearn went to Japan. He stayed here, in Kumamoto from 1891 to 1894.
The exhibition shows not only the objects that belong to Hearn but also the works of Japanese contemporary artists who have inherited the taste and imagination from Hearn.
