The Light – Prayerful Paintings
The exhibition “The Light – Prayerful Paintings” was first conceived when Kunie Endo, a patient at the National Sanatorium Kikuchiekeifuen, a facility for people with Hansen’s disease, was asked to participate in the exhibition “ATTITUDE 2002: One Truth in Your Heart.” Her contribution to the show was a doll, Taro-kun, that she had treated as if it were her own child. Endo introduced us to the other members of the Kinyoukai, who had made artworks under the unimaginably depressing conditions of a completely quarantined life. Although their works depicted the hometowns and parents to which they could not return, they were mental landscapes filled with light rather than expressions of anger or resentment toward society. Once we became aware of what they were doing, we felt that it was necessary to share their art with the public.
The first “The Light” was held in 2003. Vol. 2 of the series was presented in 2005 and this exhibition will be “The Light – Prayerful Paintings vol. 3.” This show will include paintings from Tairouin Clinic and Fukusei Memorial Hall in addition to the work of the painting club of Kikuchikeifuin.
Also on display are the amazingly detailed pencil drawings by Susumu Kinoshita of the blind shamisen player Haru Kobayashi and patients from national sanatoriums and Father Damien by Yasutake Funakoshi, a portrait of a priest who devoted his life to helping Hansen’s disease patients on the Hawaiian island of Molokai and eventually died of the disease.
The artworks in this exhibition provide greater understanding through art of people with Hansen’s disease and the issues it raises and give expression to the prayers of people who are concerned with these issues. |
