The term "Art Brut" was coined by the 20th century French artist Jean Debuffet, and is meant to express the idea of "raw art". Free from the influence of art history and the culture of artistic conventions, this pure form expresses a relaxed sense of freedom. Born simply from the impulse to create, the expression is unfettered by pressures of competition or acclaim. Regardless of physical or mental disabilities, this art is produced by people without any kind of technical art training, and brims with original ideas and the joy of creation, causing us to reevaluate our sometimes confining relationship with preexisting works.
After charming over 120,000 people during its showing at the Hall Saint Pierre in Paris (March 2010-January 2011), the "Art Brut Japonais" exhibition makes its triumphant return to Japan. With over 600 works by 63 Japanese artists, the powerful energy and rich expressions let us experience firsthand the root of creation, and the elation that comes with creative expression.
