Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto(CAMK)is pleased to present Welcome to the Jungle: Contemporary Art in Southeast Asia from the Collection of Singapore Art Museum, showcasing 28 Southeast Asian contemporary artworks from 1999-present, ranging from sculpture and painting to video and photography by 25 artists from 8 countries: Singapore; Malaysia; the Philippines; Indonesia; Thailand; Vietnam; Myanmar and Cambodia.
In recent years, Southeast Asia has caught the world's attention with it spectacular economic development but the real spectacle has been its cultural development. This region is one in which multiethnic peoples coexist amongst a diversity of complex historical backgrounds, differing values and unique religions. Together they form an original meta-culture whose collective whole is even greater than the sum of its parts. Through the works in Welcome to the Jungle, we would like to share with our spectators the mosaic that is Southeast Asia today. This exhibition is jointly organised by Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto, Yokohama Museum of Art and Singapore Art Museum. The pieces were selected from Singapore's national collection of contemporary art.
Additionally, we are also displaying 29 works by 18 artists from 8 countries: Singapore; Malaysia; Indonesia; Thailand; Vietnam; Myanmar; Cambodia and Laos in collaboration with Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, which is known internationally for its impressive exhibitions of Asian modern and contemporary art. |
