CAMK NEWS YAYOI KUSAMA-Sailing the Sea of Infinity 29 April-3 July 2005
It was our great pleasure to present an exhibition of Yayoi Kusama who has always been at the forefront of contemporary art for half a century.
Yayoi Kusama was born in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture in 1929. In 1957 when she was in her twenties, Kusama moved by herself to the USA where her artistic talent came into full bloom. She quickly elicited great admiration with her “infinity net” paintings, and as an originator of “soft sculpture” using objects such as furniture pieces and boats covered by cloth protrusions. In the 1960s, the name “Yayoi Kusama” came to be widely known beyond the art world by her trailblazing installations and performances. After 1973 when she returned to Tokyo, Kusama has kept on amazing art lovers with her remarkable activities at home and abroad, in particular since the 1980s. Her solo exhibition celebrated the opening of the Center for International Contemporary Arts in New York in 1989. Japan was represented by her exhibition in the 45th Venice Biennale in 1993.
Kusama has always been trying to cross the borders between “art and life” or “art and society” with her vision arising from her mind, to restore the world filled with sturdy liveliness from microcosm to macrocosm. In today’s world where our surroundings have been thoroughly fragmented and systematized, Kusama’s art will open our eyes to something that can never be fragmented- love, life, and the Universe.
The exhibits include Kusama’s magnificent paintings and sculptures after the 1980s, recent installations of light and objects, as well as earlier masterpieces. The exhibition is going to travel to five cities with varying concepts and structures, subtitled respectively, Eternity-Modernity in Tokyo and Kyoto, Eight Places for Burning Soul in Hiroshima, Sailing the Sea of Infinity in Kumamoto, and The Place for My Soul in Matsumoto. We hope the viewer can enjoy the world of Kusama’s art.
