The Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto is pleased to present the exhibition, Presents from Eiji Mitooka: Designs to Make People and Cities Happier. Eiji Mitooka is an internationally acclaimed designer, well-known for designing "Kyushu Shinkansen" and "Seven Stars in Kyushu."
In his design work, Mitooka aims at creating an environment that helps people develop richer sensibilities. His diverse designs are based on innovative ideas and make use of regional characteristics. His designs go beyond simple, unitary products, extending from rolling stock to stations and the surrounding city streets. They are meant to bring a creative influence into the lives of people. The theme of this exhibition is Mitooka's design concept of "offering enjoyable memories to many people" and it is pervaded by Mitooka's characteristic generosity. It presents much of his work in varied forms, including representative of his early works, cabins of the "Seven Stars in Kyushu", models of the "Kyushu Shinkansen", original furniture, and idea sketches.
In August 2014, Kumamoto City is celebrating the 90th anniversary of its first streetcar and in October a new train designed by Mitooka will go into service. Called COCORO, it features an extremely low floor. Along with this new streetcar project, Mitooka is exhibiting his illustrations of the streets and natural environment of Kumamoto, drawn from the vantage point of urban design. In these drawings, he explores the kinds of design and service needed in Kumamoto, which aims at being a "city that provides a better life."
We hope that visitors to the exhibition will be able to sense the capacity of Mitooka's design to create excitement and happiness and fulfill people's dreams.
