Contemporary Art Museum Kumamoto is currently showing “Yasumasa Morimura- Bi [bi:]-Class, Be Quiet”! Born in Osaka in 1951, Yasumasa Morimura studied at the Kyoto City University of Arts. Morimura has created self-portraits photographs of great Western paintings such as Gogh’s self-portrait and Cézanne’s still life which features the artist’s replacing the faces of the works’ original subjects with his own. He shows new interpretation of art history through the masterpieces from which he borrows. “The Classroom of Art”is composed of his representative self-portrait works, video-art(first work that he acts as a man), and brand-new plastic work. These works are installed in an arranged space like a classroom inviting the viewer on a special art historical journey. Upon stepping in the exhibition space, you arrive in the classroom to see the contents of six classes on the black board. The voice of “Teacher Morimura” heard through audio guide, takes you through various art history lessons. Six rooms, the Room of Vermeer, Room of Gogh, Room of Rembrandt, Room of La Gioconda, Room of Frida Kahlo, and the Room of Goya await you. The last room you encounter is the room of Yukio Mishima. We hope you enjoy and experience the world of art history created by Morimura.
*Yukio Mishima Japanese Novelist. He denounced politics in Japan and committed ritual suicide by seppuku.
