TARO OKAMOTO

La solitude absolue

We would like to introduce CAMK's fifth exhibition, "Taro Okamoto -La solitude absolue," an indelible figure in the art world of modern day Japan.

As one of the most well known and popular artists in the postwar era, Taro Okamoto's (1911-1996) well rounded talents were presented to the world at the 1970 Osaka Expo, Tower of the Sun, as well as a television commercial he appeared in, where he recited his famous line, "Art is an Explosion."
Despite the clarity and brightness of the expression contained in his vast breadth of work, which began during his student days in Paris in the 1930's and continued until the last period of this life, it may be more appropriate to read a hidden, deep and dark underlying message behind each piece.

In this show we will examine his solitude, despite continuously being in the limelight as a leading artist in the postwar art world, and look into his paintings, sculptures, interior designs and film chronicles, to understand and get insight to the areas and ideas he felt he could not express to his complete satisfaction. In "La solitude absolue" you will experience the driving energy of his absolute solitude.
