Textiles have been an exceedingly familiar part of human life since ancient times. They have covered the body, been raised to the sky as signs of prayer or celebration, and decorated ritual sites and ordinary people’s living space.
This exhibition is composed of the festive, celebratory banners of the Edo period, fishing boat flags expressing prayers for a good catch from the Kumamoto coast, tarpaulins, quilted kimonos, stationary banners, Boy’s Day pennants donated by the people of Kumamoto in commemoration of the four hundredth anniversary of the building of Kumamoto Castle, and the work of Kozue Hibino, Meo Saito, and Aiko Tezuka, three of the most progressive and dynamic artists using textiles as a medium in Japan today.
It traces the historical currents of diverse styles of expression which are rooted deeply in nature and embody the most basic human thoughts and feelings in textiles, while spotlighting cutting-edge art that is connected to the past but responds directly to the present.
